From the Pastor’s Desk: Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal

The Lenten Appeal is vital to good works & needed community programs

Annual Lenten Appeal Diocese of Harrisburg 2017During Lent, we participate in the Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal as a part of our support for the mission of the Church and in conjunction with our Lenten almsgiving. The Lenten Appeal allows the Diocese of Harrisburg to engage in the many works of faith, hope, and charity. This outreach of evangelization and mercy is varied and important in our local community: monies from this appeal provide funding for education, youth programs, sacramental preparation, and the Catholic Witness newspaper, as well as other catechetical and faith formation programs.
An assortment of charitable works — soup kitchens, food pantries, thrift shops, immigrant and refugee services, adoption and foster care programs, homeless shelters, and counseling services for families and individuals — are dependent upon our generosity to the Lenten Appeal.
The Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal is the sole support of many good works and needed programs in our local community.
In order to fund these varied ministries, a unique parish assessment is created for every parish in the Diocese of Harrisburg. The parish assessments are constructed so that each will contribute proportionally toward funding the works of evangelization and mercy.
Further, the Lenten Appeal for our parish has also been a significant source of income toward our Annual Operating Budget. This occurs because, any funds that surpass the Lenten Appeal assessment for a parish are returned to our parish. Therefore, if we as a Parish Community exceed the Lenten Appeal assessment, we receive the extra monies that we have collected. I urge each of you to contribute to the Bishop’s Annual Lenten Appeal, to support the many good works throughout the Diocese of Harrisburg and our own parish.
May the Lord reward you for your generosity,

Fr. Wilke
